More than 850 Regina residents took part in electing Louis Browne yesterday as the federal Liberal candidate for Regina-Lewvan.

“I am honoured to have been selected by local Liberals yesterday and look forward to being part of Justin’s team of outstanding candidates in the next federal election” said Louis Browne, a well-known lawyer and former Regina City Councillor, who was elected civically from 2006 to 2012. “It was a great nomination race, and I congratulate my fellow contestants Perry Juttla, John Williams, Marni Fullerton, and Paul Huber for their hard work.”

The new electoral constituency of Regina-Lewvan is made up of voters on the west side of Regina. It is seen as one of the Harper government’s most vulnerable ridings in Canada. The NDP have selected Erin Weir as their candidate in Regina-Lewvan, and the Tories have not yet selected a candidate.

“Last night was our largest nomination in Saskatchewan in more than a decade. More than 850 paid Liberal members took part in voting for our new candidate, and that high level of engagement in the nomination process is a good predictor of the local desire for change.  We are very optimistic and confident about Louis’ chances of becoming Regina-Lewvan’s first Member of Parliament,” said Courtney Keith, who chairs of the federal Liberal election campaign in Southern Saskatchewan.  “As a long-time city councillor and community volunteer, Louis has always been dedicated to making Regina better and is focused on the issues and priorities of local residents.  Louis will be a fantastic representative for Regina in Parliament after the next federal election.”

“Justin’s commitment to allowing local voters to select their own candidates for Parliament has made a big difference in the renewal of our party,” said Mr. Browne. As part of his Democratic Renewal platform, Justin Trudeau committed last year to ensuring that all 338 Liberal candidates running in the next election would be selected by local nomination meetings.

Louis joins over 120 other Team Trudeau candidates previously nominated across Canada in preparation for the 2015 Federal Election.
